National Science Olympiad Competition


The LASA Science Olympiad Team competed at the 2009 National Science Olympiad Competiton in Augusta Georgia this past weekend and placed 8th overall in the Nation!!! This is the first time in the 25 year history of Science Olympiad that a team from a South-Central State has placed in the top 10 in the Nation.


This incredible finish is the end result of tremendous committment, focus, enthusiasm, and months and months of study. Please join me in congratulating Ryan Doubrava, Andrew Vanderburg, Emily Liljestrand, Frasier Liljestrand, Bunker Hillis, Alicia Zhang, Eliza McDonald, Rose Kent-McGlew, Jaewon Oh, Qiaoyi Wang, Angela Liu, Jeffrey Holzgrafe, Chloe Ling, Victoria Cui, Chris Wang, Travis Owen, Martin Lin, Mark Sands, Ran Liu, and Arami Rosales. This win is truly the result of team effort and each of these students deserves recognition for their effort and steadiness under pressure.

5th Place in Cell Biology: Emily Liljestrand and Victoria Cui

4th Place in Disease Detective: Frasier Liljestrand and Alicia Zhang

2nd Place in Egg-o-naut: Angela Liu and Qiaoyi Wang

6th Place in Forensics: Rose Kent-McGlew and Chloe Ling

4th Place in Health Science: Victoria Ciu and Alicia Zhang

4th Place in Picture This: Bunker Hillis, Alicia Zhang, and Eliza McDonald

5th Place in Protein Modeling: Ran Liu, Mark Sands, and Arami Rosales


Ms. Spence and I would also like to thank Ann Hillis, Ann Vanderburg, and Howard Liljestrand. These three parents have been a constant support to the team this year and we appreciate all their help tremendously.


AND Alicia Zhang and her team won 3 special awards at the Intel ISEF in the Mathematics Category. Their project, Survival Analysis of Gene Expression Data Using a Hybrid Dimension Reduction Technique won...

  • American Statistical Association - First Award of $1,000
  • Mu Alpha Theta, National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society - First Award of $1,000
  • American Mathematics Society - Third Award of $250

The Intel ISEF award ceremony was held in Reno the day before! Alicia traveled all night to make it to Science Olympiad in Georgia! Congratulations!
