"Not a Senior" Parent Night
LASA's "Not a Senior" Parent Night will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00
p.m. in the LBJ Cafeteria. Parents of 9th, 10th and 11th grade students are invited to attend.
Breakout sessions offered will include: college admissions, financial aid, college application
essays, Naviance-Family Connection, four-year planning, and ACC Early College Start.
Students are also welcome and encouraged to attend this event. We hope to see you there!

Class of 2010 Mini-Celebration
The next Class of 2010 Mini-Celebration will be Wednesday, February 10. We will be decorating Valentine's Day cookies. We need:
volunteers during both lunches -- approximately 10:30 to 1:30 -- or any time you can work.
cash donations to buy cookies. Please make checks payable to Class of 2010 Senior Celebration and put "Mini-Celebration" in the memo line. Drop them in the LASA office by Friday, February 5 or contact Suzanne Alston at salston@austin.rr.com or 638-3443 to make arrangements to pick them.

Congratulations to Maricruz Aguayo-Tabor, history
department chair, named as a 2009 Milken National Educator Award
recipient.
LASA
High School is ranked the #36 high school in the country by Newsweek
based on the number of AP exams divided by the number of graduates.
LASA
earned an exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency for its
performance on the TAKS test, attendance rates, and completion rates.
The
LASA Quiz Bowl team finished in 11th place at Nationals! Congratulations
to Mr. Flowers and his fantastic team of Quiz bowl players.
The LASA Science Olympiad Team competed at the 2009
National Science Olympiad Competition in Augusta, Georgia and placed
8th overall in the Nation! This is the first time in the 25
year history of Science Olympiad that a team from a South-Central State
has placed in the top 10 in the Nation. Congratulations to the LASA
SciO team members and to LASA teachers/SciO Coaches Alicia Ruch-Flynn

to LASA Science teacher Alicia Ruch-Flynn for being selected as
AISD’s “High School Teacher of the Year”.
Ms. Ruch-Flynn will be honored at the AISD/Partners in Education Salute
Ceremony on May 5th, where she is in the running for AISD’s
“Teacher of the Year”!
Congratulations
to The Liberator, LBJ/LASA’s student newspaper,
for receiving three top national honors for high school publications:
the Silver Crown by Columbia Scholastic Press
Association, the Pacemaker, the top national award
given by National Scholastic Press Association, and the Gold
Star given by the Interscholastic League Press Conference. The
Liberator is the only school in Texas this year to receive both the
Silver Crown and the Pacemaker! Kudos to Journalism teacher, Janet
Elbom.
The
LASA Science Olympiad team is ranked 1st in Texas, winning
with a spectacular performance at the Texas State Science Olympiad
competition this past weekend. The students placed 1st or 2nd in 22 out

The team will represent the state of Texas at the National Science
Olympiad tournament, May 13th in Augusta Georgia. Kudos to Alicia

Thirteen
LASA German students placed 90th % or above in the National
German exam this past Sunday and German teacher Keri Jaworski was
honored with the "Duden" award (named after the famous German
dictionary) for achievement and excellence in the teaching of German.

to the LASA Robotics Team! LASA's Robotics
team traveled to Atlanta April 17-18 to compete in the World
Championship of the F.I.R.S.T. Robotic Competition. Out of
1,800 teams from around the world, LASA Robotics finished 106th!!!
This on the heels of an incredible year in which LASA Robotics
placed 1st at the Capital Best Competition, 1st at the FRC Dallas
Regional and took home the Chairman's Award at the Lone Star Regional.
Kudos to Robotics teachers and sponsors, Tony Bertucci and Alison
Earnhart, and all of the Robotics students and their families!
