Parents:

It has been a great week for LASA.

First, we were named the 95th ranked high school in the nation by Newsweek.  The index upon which the rankings are based is the number of AP exams taken divided by the number of graduating seniors. This is the last ranking we will share with LBJ.  Next year, we will be ranked independently.  Had we been ranked independently this year, we would have had an index of nearly 6.0, giving us a ranking of #16.

Secondly, we received our TAKS scores this week and your students scored extremely well on the tests they took.  Since accountability ratings the state releases have quite a few components besides the scores themselves, it will likely be August before we know for sure what category (Acceptable, Recognized, or Exemplary) LASA earned in its first year.

We were able to pick up the official TAKS student score reports on Friday.  Your students will have them in hand on Wednesday.  We will likely have a temporary advisory class for the students to attend for about 10 minutes at the beginning of one of the periods for distribution.

Class of 2010 Parent Meet-and-Greet and Plan-A-Little Get-Together

On Saturday, May 31, at 10 a.m., parents of the Class of 2010 will hold a brief meeting at Central Market Cafe (on North Lamar) in the upstairs seating area.  We want to meet one another and talk, very informally, about our children's junior and senior high school years.  In other years, parents have begun to meet on a more regular basis in the spring of their students' Junior years.  This is an early meeting to discuss in general terms what the next two years will hold.  It's also an opportunity to meet parents with whom we will share the journey.  Questions?  Please contact Cindy Stewart, PFLASA Representative for Class of 2010, 467-1352 or austew@austin.rr.com

Theatre Action Project Summer Volunteer Opportunity!  Do you like to work with kids? Appreciate theatre and other creative arts?  We have plenty of summer volunteer and internship possibilities working with Austin and Round Rock youth. Assist at one of our fun-filled summer camps where elementary-aged children use their creativity to express themselves.  Or, be a part of our June "Pageant in the Park" project where several area elementary schools will explore the myth, "The Woman Who Outshone the Sun" to create a beautiful bilingual performance incorporating masks, puppets, scenes and music to be featured in a culminating community event, the Summer Pageant in the Park on June 21, 2008.  If you are interested, contact Ann Graham, TAP Board Member and PFLASA Co-Chair or Sarah McCafferty, Volunteer Coordinator for details at (512)442-8773 or sarah_mccafferty@theatreactionproject.org.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LASA QUIZ BOWL TEAM!

From Mr. Flowers and the Quiz Bowlers:

Parents:
The tournament has ended for LASA A Team after a great run. We beat our in-state rival St. John's A by 30 in the first round of the playoffs. We beat Dorman A of South Carolina in round 2 - a team consistently ranked #1 in the nation for most of the year - in possibly the greatest game our team has ever played. We lost our next two games - one to Thomas Jefferson and the last to Dorman A. After a 2-2 record in the playoffs, LASA A Team finished 7th in the nation.  Our B team won five games on Saturday and missed the playoffs by only one question.

I cannot possibly tell you how proud I am of these guys. They all played their hearts out over the last two days, and with the B team's strong finish, the future looks bright for our team.
